Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels

A wide range of chemical peels are available to treat various conditions such as ageing skin, pigmentation and acne. Chemical peels are regenerative and increase skin cell turnover and metabolism.

Superficial depth peels have no down-time, medium depth peels cause flaking for 3-4 days while deep peels have up to 7 days of downtime. The depth of the peeling depends on the time of application, the number of layers applied and the type and concentration of the chemical agent used.

Chemical peeling (chemexfoliation) is a skin regeneration procedure where a chemical solution is applied to remove the top layers of the skin. Once the skin is healed it becomes smoother, less wrinkled with decreased pigmentation and a more youthful appearance. The most popular chemicals used for this purpose are: Alfa and Beta hydroxyacids (AHA and BHA), Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and Phenol.

How do chemical peels work?

The role of chemical peeling is to create a wound of a specific depth in the skin in order to stimulate new growth, leading to an improvement of the texture and the appearance of the skin. The chemical solution causes controlled damage to the skin that leads to thickening of the epidermis, increased production of collagen, increased dermal volume as well as reorganization of important skin elements. Chemical peels speed up the natural cell turnover and stimulate production of new collagen.

Depth of peels

Depending of the depth of the injury, chemical peelings are divided into : very superficial, which remove stratum corneum, superficial ( epidermal) which cause necrosis of the full thickness of the epidermis, medium which lead to necrosis of the epidermis as well as upper layers of the dermis (papillary dermis) deep which reach deeper layers of the dermis (reticular).

Results

Results depend on the type of the peel, but generally one can expect: Improvement in skin discolouration, hyperpigmentation, pore size and skin texture, reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. The skin is rejuvenated and looks refreshed. There is an improvement in acne, especially comedonal acne as well as improvement in scars, especially post acne scars.

The benefits of chemical peels include cost effectiveness compared to other skin resurfacing treatments and a short healing time: usually 3-7 days (no downtime for superficial peels) . Superficial peelings can be used for most skin types.

How many and how far apart should peels be done?

The frequency of the peel will be determined by your doctor. For most patients, peels should be done three to four times a year starting at puberty to repair sun damage, and to avoid permanent scarring for those affected by acne.
For damaged skin, Peels can initially be done once every week or two for quicker desired results.

How do Skin Tech Peels differ from other peels?

Without exception, obsolete peels of the past epitomize the “No pain, no gain” approach to skin care. Before the Skin Tech peels the deeper the peel, the more painful, the more downtime, the better the results. Skin Tech peels combine the safest and most effective acids, yet it’s virtually painless with little downtime.

How many treatments are needed to show improvement?

A single Easy TCA Peel will achieve significant repair and add a healthy glow to the skin. Some conditions like acne scars, pore enlargement and hyper pigmentation might require multiple applications. It is a restorative and painless repair of damaged skin, including sun damage and acne. Best of all, it is a true aging preventative for younger skin with no visible damage.

Will results be long lasting?

Like everything else in life, skin needs maintenance. The Skin Tech peels results will last as long as skin is maintained with the Skin Care Home Products. The peels should be performed three to four times per year.

What skin types respond well to Skin Tech Peels?

The many innovations that created the Skin Tech Peels  allow ALL skin types to enjoy the benefits of the peel. For the first time, African-American and darker skin types such as Asian and Latin patients can experience anti-aging and restorative skin repair previously unavailable. But please remember to consult a qualified doctor with a lot of experience in skin peeling if you have a Photo- type III – VI Skin type, to avoid long term problems.

Does it burn?

Not really. You will feel a slight stinging sensation for a few seconds which subsides almost immediately. The peel is applied topically, and numbing of the skin takes place after the first pass. Some patients feel more comfortable using a fan or cold air breeze.

How badly will I peel?

The skin peeling associated with the Easy TCA peel  is a light, fluffy peel that will start on day three and generally be finished by the end of day four. The peeling is easily hidden by moisturizer. In some cases, the peel is virtually invisible. Patients using Retin A may experience heavier peeling. The peel can be modulated by your skin care provider to produce a deeper, more aggressive peel, if necessary, depending on your skin condition.

How will I look after the peel for the next few days?

The skin will look slightly red and glowing immediately after the peel. On days one and two the skin will feel slightly tighter, with no visible signs of having had a peel. Any pigmented areas might appear slightly darker. On approximately day three, you will begin to peel. The first signs of peeling usually begin around the mouth area and continue for a day or two. With the use of a barrier repair cream, you may go about your usual daily routine. By day six or day seven you will be done peeling and the results are dramatic! If a more aggressive peel was performed, a secondary peel might occur around day seven.

What about normal activities after a Skin Tech Peel?

There are no restrictions. We recommend avoiding heavy sweating for the first few days after the peel. Normal activities can be resumed immediately after the peel. We Strongly recommend that you avoid the sun during the peeling process and wear an SPF of at least 30+ daily during the peeling process and daily there after.

What will Skin Tech Peels  do for my skin?

They tackle skin problems at the cellular level rather than just burning skin off. The concerted actions of its acids and vitamins will help erase fine lines and wrinkles, shrink enlarged pores, and build collagen and elastin to tighten skin. The Skin Tech range is effective in reducing or eliminating hyper pigmentation including melasma, the most difficult pigmentation issue to correct, and also provides excellent results for acne.

How many peels are needed?

The peel may be repeated as often as every two weeks initially, if necessary. Our recommendation for maintenance of average skin would be once every three months to prevent damage and aging of the skin. Dr Debbie will evaluate your skin, your goals and expectations to make an appropriate recommendation.

What results will I see after one Skin Tech Easy TCA Peel?

It takes about four days after you finish peeling for the skin to return to its normal PH and to see the final effects. The skin will look luminous and glowing. Hyper-pigmentation will be improved or eliminated, depending on the amount of damage. Tone and texture will be improved for a more youthful, radiant appearance.

Does the Peel thin the skin?

No. By sloughing off the old skin and forcing the body to recreate new skin at a faster rate, the skin actually thickens, stimulating the underlying structure to make more collagen and elastin.

Will my skin be more sensitive after the Peel?

The skin will be more sensitive during the peeling process itself. You may experience up to four days of sensitivity until PH of the skin is replenished.

Will Peels tighten neck skin?

Yes. The Skin Tech Peels have been shown to help improve texture and quality with gradual softening of the lines and some tightening effects. The peeling process and results are different from the face.

What other areas can Skin Tech Peels be performed on?

The neck, arms, hands and chest all respond well to TCA Peels. But again always consult with the doctor first. Some areas although tough, can be very sensitive and have delayed healing.

Can I go in the sun after a Skin Tech Peel?

Sun exposure should be limited and Sun Protection Products used liberally. However, newer generation peels were created to be practical. The only days where exposure to the sun should be seriously avoided are three and four, when the skin is peeling, to avoid uneven exposure. After that, you can enjoy moderate sun exposure, continuing regular skin care maintenance and daily sun protection.

Can cold sore sufferers have a Peel?

Of course. In some cases, the physician may recommend pre-medication prior to the peel. If you break out with a sudden cold sore the day of the peel,  or are prone to cold sores, inform the doctor so medication may be started concomitantly.

Are teenage acne sufferers too young for Skin Tech Peels?

Specially  formulated ingredients in the Skin Tech Range of Peels are excellent for both adult and adolescent acne.

We have effectively peeled acne patients as young as 12. Results are quick and impressive. Combined with a daily skin regimen, almost all acne cases can be successfully managed. Please note that treating acne scars will require a series of peels.

Does Skin Tech Peels help with precancerous cells?

Yes, some peeling agents help remove precancerous cells. Of course, those with a history of skin cancer should always see their dermatologist or surgeon on a regular basis. Chemical Peels are not designed to treat cancer but offer a comprehensive way to prevent it. Always consult with a doctor with experience in chemical peels.

Who will perform the Skin Tech Peels?

Only doctors should perform the TCA Peels. Skin Care Therapists who are supervised and work for a doctor can perform superficial peels.

What can I do to make sure my skin stays beautiful?

Maintenance is essential. Using the Skin Tech Daily Care system ensures you will not only keep your Skin Tech Peel results, but also improve your skin’s texture, suppleness, and clarity.
